In their natural environment orchids are exposed to temperature variations between day and night depending on the season or the height where they grow. These variations ranging between 8° to 10 ° C are especially important to species living at a higher altitude as they trigger the blossoming of the flower.
Generally speaking, orchids can be classified in three categories :
1) Those who seek a warm climate, ranging from 18°C to 30°C during the day and 16°C to 25°C at night, with a small 2° to 5°C temperature variation between daytime and night time.
2) Those living in temperate climates require an average temperature of 18°C to 25°C during the day and 13° C to 16°C at night, with a small 5° to 10°C temperature variation between daytime and night time.
3) Those living in colder climates which require an average temperature of 15°C to 20°C during the day and 8°C to 14°C at night, with a temperature variation between daytime and night time that sometimes exceed 10°C.
Unless your orchid can be placed in a greenhouse that can recreate a cold or temperate climate, do not favour the species that originates from higher altitudes as they usually thrive from fluctuations in temperature from 5°c and up.
(Especially if you cannot place the plant in a shaded outdoor area such as a patio or a balcony.) |
